Blending supernatural horror and the history of the black community during the Jim Crow era, the film uses vampires as symbols of the exploitation of black culture and talent. It also explores issues of identity, sacrifice, and family relationships through its main characters. The story is set in 1932 Mississippi, USA, when twin brothers Smoke and Stack (Michael B. Jordan), veterans of World War I, return to their hometown to open a juke joint with their cousin Sammie Moore (Miles Caton), a talented blues guitarist.
