Without any major story changes, the 2025 version of “How to Train Your Dragon” will be 27 minutes longer than the animated version, with 100 additional bits of content added: expanded dialogue, backstory for Astrid, extended flight scenes, more time-travel to recruit training, and of course, aesthetic differences between the live-action and animated scenes. That may not seem like a big deal to hardcore fans of the franchise, but the brevity seeps into the overall experience in a way that cannot be underestimated. The original (and its sequels)’ fluid, melodramatic nature feels sluggish from the start. Even the “Welcome to Berk” intro feels a beat or two too long. The pacing is off, and it’s not just because we know everything that’s coming up before the characters. This version of “HTTYD” doesn’t stand out, doesn’t flow as well as the original. It almost feels like a re-edited version of the film. Of course, the main reason for making a film again after 15 years is technical: It uses modern special effects to adapt the original books in a way that wasn’t possible in 2010. And some of the new “How to Train Your Dragon” looks impressive, especially the one-on-one scenes between Hiccup and Toothless, where you’d forget that Mr. Thames is acting opposite a tennis ball and/or puppet. The film isn’t perfect, though, with some flying sequences revealing that what we’re seeing isn’t really happening. It’s funny how we get so lost in animation, thinking that the impossible is real, but when a film tries to achieve live-action “realism,” it’s easier to see the flaws of CGI.
